Biodiversity and children in a changing environment
Prompts for discussion
-
Have you ever seen a river or a stream? Draw a picture and discuss how the water got there and all the things it had to pass through?
-
Would the water be cleaner if it made its way through forests and wetlands or through cities? Why?
-
Have you ever thought about how many types of plants and animals you eat? Write them down? Do you know where they come from or how they are fed?
-
Different plants are able to adapt to different circumstances. For example, some plants are able to survive a drought and live in a desert, while others are able to survive a flood but it is rare for a plant to be good at both. Imagine a field by a river which sometimes has floods and sometimes has droughts. What would be the best things to plant there? Why?
-
Go for a nature walk and make a list of all the different plants and animals that you can find in or near your community.
-
Count the different types of trees that are around your school. Has your class ever planted trees? Discuss how to develop a tree planting project using trees that are native to your region. (click here to go to the facilities-based guideline on tree planting)
