How to Set Up a School Garden
1. Define the objectives of the garden
The objectives set will influence the type of plants that will be grown in the garden. Possible objectives are:
- improving children’s diet
- teaching children how to produce, harvest, process and prepare food
- teaching children how to eat better and appreciate a variety of healthy foods
- giving children the opportunity to apply new knowledge (e.g. calculating bed sizes)
- enhancing and respecting the school environment
- developing life skills (in a team, children can learn to share responsibility, cooperate to plan work and take pride together in their achievements)
- developing basic business skills
