Taking Care of a Tree Nursery

Weeding
Weeds take nutrients, water and light from tree seedlings. If they are not controlled, they can sap the seedlings so much that they die. Nurseries have enough water and light for both seedlings and small weeds, but large weeds will take too much. Weeds should be removed as soon as possible.

Taking care of the root system
In case trees are growing in pots, longer roots should be pruned back to encourage many branch roots to form inside the pot.

Controlling pests and fungus in the nursery
Conditions that attracts insects should be avoided (area around seedbed should be clear of other vegetation, insect-repelling plants like pyrethrum, garlic, chillies and marigolds could be grown around the beds, etc.); to avoid and control fungus, it is important not to overwater, to space seedlings well, to give the seedlings no more than 50% shade.
