Taking Care of a Tree Nursery
Maintenance tasks
Maintenance tasks include cleaning out filters* and doing timely repairs to the
nursery water supplies, looking after tools, keeping up fences, gates and
hedges.
Tools needed
It is possible to run a school nursery quite effectively with just a few basic
tools: (a) the farm tools used locally for cultivating the soil and for cutting
poles and weeds; (b) a shovel for mixing up potting soils, and a hand tool for
filling the containers; (c) a pail and an old plastic bottle or can with holes in
the bottom for watering; (d) convenient pieces of wood or metal to lift out
newly rooted cuttings and small seedlings, for potting up or transplanting
and for weeding.
Other tools such as a spade, a sieve, a funnel, a pickaxe or crowbar, a hammer and nails, a saw and a ladder would be useful if some funds are available.
*If the water contains too many suspended particles, they can be fairly easily removed by passing the water through a simple filter (for example, gravel followed by coarse sand).
