Setting Up A Tree Nursery

4. Prepare the site - Introduction

Young seedlings will grow best if they are in a spot that offers them shade from the burning sun, healthy well-draining, soil and protection from strong winds, rainwater run-off and nibbling animals.

A flat, well-drained site close to water (or the water supply point) of around 10 m² will be large enough for a bare-rooted seedbed and some storage and workspace. The space should be cleared of all vegetation and fenced in order to keep out grazing animals. In case of a potted seedling nursery, it is recommended to place the containers or pots on a cleared flat area near water. The nursery needs shade to protect the young seedlings. Especially where there is too little natural shade, it is recommended to install a roof using a material that gives about 50% shade.
