Ecological Sanitation
Ecological sanitation (ecosan) is a way to manage human waste by recycling
it back into the soil and thus closing the natural nutrient cycle.
Ecological sanitation can be defined as a system that:
The present module provides background information on these basic principles,
illustrates possible ecosan systems and their adequacy in different contexts,
discusses the use of ecosan products in agriculture and how to set up
an ecosan system in the school context.
It is important to note that ecological sanitation is one of many sanitation
options. Although it may be appropriate in various contexts, a wide range of
options should be considered and evaluated by the different stakeholders in
the planning stage.
