Ecological Sanitation
Sanitation generally refers to the provision of facilities and services for the safe disposal of human urine and faeces. The word 'sanitation' also refers to the maintenance of hygienic conditions, through services such as garbage collection and wastewater disposal.
Today, 2.6 billion people - 40% of the world population - do not have access to any type of improved sanitation facility.
Safe drinking water and hygienic sanitation facilities are a precondition for health and for success in the fight against poverty, hunger, child deaths and gender inequality. They are also central to the human rights and personal dignity of every woman, man and child on earth. Finally, improved management of human waste contributes to resource saving and environmental protection.
