Ecological Sanitation
Health
Inadequate sanitation is a major cause of disease worldwide. About 2 million people die every year due to diarrhoeal diseases, most of them are children less than 5 years of age. Diarrhoeal diseases are mainly attributed to unsafe water supply, inadequate sanitation and hygiene. The most affected are the populations in developing countries, living in extreme conditions of poverty, normally peri-urban dwellers or rural inhabitants.
Hygiene and sanitation are among the most cost-effective public health interventions to reduce childhood mortality. Access to a toilet alone can reduce child diarrhoeal deaths by over 30 percent, and hand-washing by more than 40 percent.
