Hand Dug Well

Hand dug wells are constructed with simple tools in weathered rock, overburden or sedimentary formations. The well s are lined with concrete rings, cement blocks, ferro cement, etc. Penetration into the water-bearing is minimal , there is a risk of drying up during dry season. Digging and the construction work allow that the villagers themselves can do a high percentage of the work under supervision from the construction company.

The well cover provides a protection, but water can get polluted.

Construction costs are moderate (USD 900 to 1,500)
