Planning Solar Pumping
Even though life cycle cost of a solar pump is often less than engine-powered pumps, the investment cost are higher. A solar pump, including panels, borehole, water tank, fencing and small distribution system costs USD 30,000-60,000. Decisions to make such an investment should not be taken lightly.
The demand needs to be properly assessed. An average sized solar pumps will deliver between 25 to 60m³ at 10m depth. Such outputs may be sufficient for 1,000 to 3,000 persons or some small scale irrigation (see also School Gardening).
