| Example: if the household needs a total of 35 litres of drinking water daily and the dry season of lasts for 4.5 months (173 days), the minimal storage capacity at the beginning of the dry season is: 137 x 35 = 4’795 litres. In this case, allowing for a factor of safety, it would be appropriate to store at least 5.5 m³ to 6 m³. |
Usually rainwater tanks are placed besides the house and are equipped with a tap near the ground for easy and hygienic access.
In places with irregular rainfall, it is advised to calculate the storage size of the water tank, to see whether the water collected is sufficient to serve during the longest dry period (without rainfall).
